NIH Public Access Policy for Journal Articles

Starting in less than a month, on April 7, 2008, scientists receiving grant money from the NIH must submit copies of their articles that are accepted for publication to PubMed Central. The papers in PubMed Central will be freely available to the public no later than 12 months after publication.

Also, starting May 25, 2008, all NIH applications, proposals, and progress reports must include the PubMed Central reference number when citing an article that falls under the policy.

New Interface for Ovid Medline

The new Ovid interface, OvidSP was released earlier this month. You'll find a new look and new features, including multiple search modes from beginning to advanced:

* Use the new Natural Language search method to phrase a complete question and receive articles ranked by the frequency and relevancy of your search terms.
* Add notes to records that are saved for future use by creating a personal account.
* Use the improved Results Manager to export records to email, print, or EndNote or Reference Manager.
* Search across multiple databases (Medline, Agricola & PsycInfo) and remove duplicate records for a comprehensive and convenient search.
* Take advantage of guided MeSH subject heading searches in Medline, which are still available with the Advanced Ovid Search feature.

New Interface & Features for Web of Science

On February 4, 2008 the Web of Science will introduce a new look and new features for searching the Science Citation Index database. The biggest change is a prominent Refine Results box on the left-hand side where you can limit your searches by specific subjects, years, authors, languages and more. Exporting options appear above the records. The Analyze Results feature allows you to compare up to 100,000 records by author, year, institution, and journal. See who has published the most papers in your field or which institutions publish in your area.

The Kresge Library has developed short, 3-5 minute tutorials to introduce you to the new interface. These can be found on the Library's Training and Guides page for Web of Science.

Beilstein Server Outage

The Beilstein CrossFire server, hosted by the University of Wisconsin Madison, will be undergoing maintenance this coming Sat/Sun from 10 pm PST, Jan 19 (Saturday) until 6 am, Jan 20 (Sunday). The server will be completely shut down during this time and inaccessible using the Beilstein CrossFire client software.

SciFinder Scholar Update

On January 2, 2008, Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) will discontinue the following versions of SciFinder Scholar:

* SciFinder Scholar 2004.2 for Windows
* SciFinder Scholar 2004.2 for Mac (OS 9)
* SciFinder Scholar Mac OS X 1.0 for Mac (OS X)

To ensure continued access to the CAS databases, please upgrade to the latest version of SciFinder Scholar by the end of December 2007. After that time, the versions of the SciFinder Scholar client noted above will be unable to access the CAS server. Download installation information for the latest versions (both Mac and PC) can be found at: http://www.scripps.edu/library/Scifinder.html.

Endnote X1 Update

EndNote X1 for Mac or PC is available for download from the Kresge Library Software Downloads page. EndNote X1 is compatible with Windows 2000, XP, and Vista, and with Mac OS 10.3.9 (Panther) - 10.4.x (Tiger), and with 10.5 (Leopard).

Features of this version include:

Group references into subject folders,

Cite While You Write in Microsoft Word 2007 for Windows,

Quick search on the EndNote toolbar,

View all author names in the library list,

Use with EndNote Web - a Web companion available via ISI Web of Knowledge.

Mandatory Update for Endnote XI Windows Users:
There is an update and a fix that needs to be downloaded for version XI if you are running Windows. To run the update after installing EndNote X1, go to the Help menu in EndNote and choose EndNote Program Updates… Then download the fix file (zipped file) and unzip it. After unzipping, locate the file "libmysqld.dll" and move it to C:\Program Files\EndNote X1\, replacing the existing file.

EndNote information for Word 2007 users:
Word 2007 works best with EndNote X1. EndNote X will work with Word 2007, but the Endnote toolbar will be found in the "Add-ins" Tab.

EndNote X1 "Cite While You Write" feature works with Microsoft Word 2000, XP, 2003, and 2007 (Windows) and Word X, 2004 (Mac).
