ScienceDirect maintenance

Elsevier will be updating their ScienceDirect journal platform on Saturday, December 1st.

During this scheduled maintenance, there may be minor disruptions to some ScienceDirect functionality.

They are working to provide better support for Google Chrome and Safari and Firefox browsers for the Mac, as well as an improved experience on mobile devices.

If you cannot get into ScienceDirect journals on Saturday, please try again at a later time.

New SpringerLink Platform

Springer, a publisher of many of our subscription journals, is moving to a new platform the week of November 26, 2012. The new SpringerLink should be faster, easier to use and optimized for most mobile devices.

If you have an individual account registered with SpringerLink you will need to set up a new profile/account because your old one will not be migrated. Make sure to do this while within the institution's IP range (i.e., on the TSRI network) as you will then be automatically associated to the Library's access rights.

You do not need an individual account to access the Library's subscribed-to content, but some people may have one for saving searches and alerts.

Access to all other content should remain the same after the migration.

Library Repairs this Weekend 10/12-10/14

Due to recent flooding in the Library, there will be some construction to replace the burst pipe in the ceiling. There will be limited seating available this weekend (10/12-10/14), as well as added noise from the repairs. In addition, some print journals have been moved.

We apologize for the inconvenience and hope to be back to normal (and all dried out!) as soon as possible.

One-Stop Shopping for Journal Articles

Can’t find the full text of an article? Does the publisher ask for payment or a login ID? Want quick access to articles without leaving the database you're currently searching? Click on the button “SFX@TSRI” (see below), which appears with article abstracts in all Kresge Library databases, to view a menu of available options for a given article, including full-text links or a link to request a copy via the ILLiad interlibrary loan system.

Simply log onto ILLiad, and SFX fills out the request form automatically. PubMed users should bookmark the customized “PubMed for Scripps Research” to view the correct buttons. Try it out on your next search or ask a library staff member for a demonstration.

NIH Public Access Policy Reminder

The Kresge Library advises researchers that any peer-reviewed National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded article must be deposited into PubMed Central (PMC) upon acceptance by the journal, as required by the NIH Public Access Policy and as a "Term & Condition" of all NIH grants. A PubMed Central ID (PMCID) is required for most articles listed on NIH grants and progress reports. PMCIDs are assigned once a manuscript’s deposit process is complete.

To comply, the corresponding author and/or principal investigator must take multiple actions “before, during, and after” publication of an NIH-funded article: before submitting the manuscript to the journal, during the deposit process, and after acceptance by the journal.

Kresge Library staff can assist researchers and administrative staff with the PMC submission process. Contact staff for help in locating existing PMCIDs, identifying published articles that require PMCIDs, submitting manuscripts to PMC, and using tools such as EndNote and MyNCBI to track compliance for an NIH grant.

For additional information on the NIH Public Access Policy or for assistance with compliance, consult the Kresge Library’s NIH Public Access Policy webpage or contact the Kresge Library Help Desk at x8705.

F1000 article on peer review and publishing

From the Faculty of 1000 post: How to overhaul peer review and scientific publishing.

"Anyone who doubts the inefficiencies and flaws of the current peer-review system would do well to read a review article published in Frontiers in Computational Neuroscience (Dec 2011) and evaluated for F1000 by Gary Aston-Jones and David Moorman."

New Library Catalog & Journal List

The Kresge Library now offers the next-generation catalog and search tool, powered by the OCLC WorldCat Local database software. The new catalog provides the library user both a local view of the library materials held at the libraries in La Jolla and Jupiter, as well as a global view of the collective library collections around the world, allowing users to scale searches using the power of the Web to create the information service that best matches their needs.

The new catalog is the main tool the Kresge Library provides to identify links to e-journals and e-books and print books available for loan. It also searches the full Medline database in the same search command. The catalog provides easy-to-use links to the familiar SFX menu and ILLiad request tools. Also available are embedded tools for citing and exporting citations to EndNote and creating and sharing lists.

More information about the new catalog may be found at http://scripps-libraries.worldcat.org/ . Check out the help guide to find out more about searching, using limits and how to renew books in the new system.

The KresgeLibrary has also launched the next-generation A-Z E-journal List, powered by SFX software, the same company that provides the SFX@TSRI tool.

Users are encouraged to explore the features of both these new tools. Previously bookmarked catalog and journal list sites must be updated to point to the new addresses. Contact the Kresge Library at ext. 8705 or email helplib@scripps.edu with questions or comments.
