Altmetric's Top 100 Articles of 2015

Altmetric, a company that tracks the attention academic articles receive through multiple mainstream sources, has published their annual Top 100 Articles of 2015. This doesn't necessarily reflect the quality of the articles, rather it provides an indicator of what was widely discussed and shared online.

Many publishers have started using the Altmetric donut visualization (the multi-colored circle) on their websites to indicate attention a particular article has received.  You can install the free Altmetric bookmarklet on your browser and find the altmetric data for your own papers.

Access to older issues of Science

The Library subscribes to ALL issues of Science, going back to volume 1, 1880.

However, access to the older issues of Science requires clicking on the correct link.

We have both links in the Library catalog and in the Journal A-Z list:

v.275(1997)- from HighWire: Current 12 months restricted to TSRI network

v.1(1880)- from JSTOR: Restricted to TSRI network: Current 6 calendar years no access at this site

When you are on the publisher's site for Science you have access only back to 1997, even though you may see other years listed. You will not be able to get access prior to 1997 on this site.

To access Science articles prior to 1997, please click on the second link that takes you to JSTOR. This is a platform that had access to the Science backfiles before they were even available with the publisher. It is also much more cost-effective.

Access to JoVE

New access to JoVE: Journal of Visualized Experiments

The Kresge Library is pleased to announce access to three sections of JoVE, the Journal of Visualized Experiments.
JoVE is a protocol resource that shows you experimental techniques through videos instead of simply reading about them. The visual format can help increase reproducibility and cut down on the time it takes to learn new experimental procedures. Each video normally includes step-by-step instructions, a demo of equipment and reagents and a discussion of possible issues and modifications.

  • JoVE Biology is a diverse section which includes cellular biochemistry, physical biology, genetics, physiology, systems biology, molecular biology, organismal biology and eukaryotic and prokaryotic model systems
  • JoVE Neuroscience is a multidisciplinary section whose primary emphasis is methods and techniques related to the structure, function, physiology and pathophysiology of the brain and nervous systems
  • JoVE Immunology and Infection is on trial access through 2016. Techniques deal with pathogens and therapeutic agents and range from the molecular to the organism level.
Videos are authored by scientists like you. Currently we have 7 authors from TSRI who have authored JoVE videos. Other videos come from Harvard, Cornell, UCSD, Johns Hopkins, NIH and MIT among a long list of contributors. JoVE is indexed by PubMed, SciFinder and Scopus.

We hope you find this beneficial to your research and the Library would love to hear any comments you have about this resource.

Science: Promoting an Open Research Culture

An article published today in the journal SciencePromoting an Open Research Culture, spells out some guidelines for publishing scientific studies. They aim to bring more transparency, openness and reproducibility to the results of scientific research.

Written in part by Dr. Marcia McNutt, editor in chief of Science as well as thirty other scientists, the guidelines come out of the Transparency and Openness Promotion (TOP) Committee that met late in 2014.

The article goes on to say that the academic promotion system does not reward open practices and that collective action is needed across scientific disciplines to make changes.

See the TOP guidelines and standards here.

ACS Mobile Journals

The American Chemical Society (ACS) has announced that institutional journal subscribers can now access the full text of their ACS journals on mobile devices.  They're calling it ACS2Go.

To access ACS journals off campus on mobile devices you first need to pair up your device while on campus.  After you do this, you can access the full-text for 120 days. Just repeat the process
again for extended access. It's available for Apple, Android and Blackberry devices.

Follow these steps:

  1. Go to http://pubs.acs.org on your mobile device while ON CAMPUS connected to the TSRI network.
  2. It will ask you to "install ACS2Go" on your device using the download button, and to add it to your home screen.
  3. You can then browse or search for journals or content while off campus and off the TSRI network for up to 120 days.
  4. You can renew the 120 days indefinitely by accessing this site again from on campus.

Lasergene 12.2 available

Lasergene 12.2 is now available for download from the Kresge Library site at:

Product Keys are no longer required.

Lasergene is a comprehensive DNA and protein sequence and structure analysis software suite. TSRI has a site license for the Lasergene Structural Biology and Evolution Suites, formerly called the Core Suite.

Although TSRI's license is for the *network* version of Lasergene, you can check out a license using the Commuter License Manager for remote (off-network) access. This manager is installed on each client machine in the same directory as the Lasergene or ArrayStar applications. You may use the Commuter License Manager to check out one simultaneous use of a license for up to 30 days. Once a license is checked out, the client computer can be disconnected from the network and the client applications will continue to function. Remember to check the Commuter License back in when returning to the network version so that others can use it.

For assistance downloading and installing Lasergene, contact the IT Services Help Desk on your campus.

For assistance using the Lasergene programs, contact DNASTAR. Contact information is given at the download link given above or go tohttp://www.dnastar.com

New JCR data and InCites

The latest journal impact factors are out! Check out the Journal Citation Reports database to get the latest impact factor for a journal you are considering publishing in.

You may notice JCR looks a lot different. It has undergone a major update and is hosted on the InCites platform.
New features and metrics include:

  • Visualizations dynamic and interactive link and node visualizations that enable users to see the strength of relationships at both the category and journal levels
  • Comparison Tools - the Compare Journals feature enables users to select journals and view comparative data based on various indicators.
  • Create and Save Reports - users can save comparison reports as well as journal lists they've created that can be accessed at a later time so long as they've logged in with a username and password.
  • 5-Year Journal Impact Factor is the average number of times articles from a journal published in the past five years have been cited in the JCR year. For journals in subjects where citation activity continues to rise through several years, this metric allows more of their total citation activity to be included in a critical performance metric.
  • Eigenfactor® Metrics, comprising the Eigenfactor® Score and Article Influence® Score, use JCR citation data to assess the influence of a journal in relation to other journals. These metrics, based on five years of citation activity, consider not just the count of citations but the structure of the citation network.

For an introduction to the new JCR InCites platform and how to search,  watch these short 3-5 minute video tutorials.
